Zanzibar's introduction of a compulsory tourism insurance scheme coincides with a significant increase in visitor numbers, according to Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Heritage Mudlik Ramadani Soraga. The policy takes effect in October 2024 and requires all tourists to pay a $44 fee. Despite initial concerns raised by industry stakeholders about the potential impact on destination competitiveness, tourist arrivals have consistently increased, reaching a record high of 91,611 in December 2024. of visitors were recorded.
Minister Soraga noted that insurance premiums have not hindered interest in Zanzibar, saying that since the implementation of the policy, the number of monthly tourists has increased by an average of 17%.
