The Secretary of Land announced this week that he will designate Myanmar with a temporary protected status for 18 months.
Key Points:
This designation allows Myanmar citizens (formerly Burma) in the United States to obtain a TPS if they meet the eligibility requirements and are able to demonstrate their continued residence in the United States as of March 11, 2021. DHS said it will immediately release the notice to the federal register to provide detailed eligibility criteria and process for TPS beneficiaries to apply for employment permit documents. The administrative authorities told the media that around 1,600 individuals in the United States could benefit from the designation.
Additional Information: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mallorkas said in a statement this week that Myanmar people are suffering from a “complex and exacerbating humanitarian crisis” after last month's military coup.
