New Orleans is gearing up to host Super Bowl XI, and it promises to be a celebration like no other, combining two mega-events into one. Coinciding with Mardi Gras, this year's festival combines the thrill of soccer with the spirit of Carnival season.
Of course, next month's festival will take place in the shadow of a deadly assault that took place in the early hours of this year's New Year's Day. The attack, which occurred on Bourbon Street in the heart of the city's French Quarter, left 14 people dead and the city is taking extra precautions and safety measures to protect attendees of next month's spree. Local officials asked former New York City Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton to review the safety plan, and the city was given more federal funding for the event.
“New Orleans & Company is building strong partnerships with the NOPD, Louisiana State Police, and other law enforcement agencies to enhance our coverage of upcoming events and conferences, and to provide additional coverage in high-traffic areas. We have patrols,” said Senior Vice President Kelly Schultz. Responsible for communications and PR for New Orleans & Company, the city's official destination marketing and sales organization.
It's a familiar home for a city that has long turned grief into renewal, from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to today. This city's ethos is famous for acknowledging life's frailties by living it to the fullest. Its hard-to-party spirit is rooted in a history of perseverance.
