Travel warnings for those who get a 4-character code on boarding pass | Travel News | Travel

While at the airport recently, the couple had left them separate after discovering a mysterious letter on their boarding pass.

Going to the airport can be a fun experience when you check in your flight, wondering about the surroundings of the shop, or taking a bite before your trip. But it also requires many organizations from passengers and security checks.

One Holidayman, Jordyn Verzera, became confused after realising the ticket's inexplicable stamp and shared what happened on her page @themobilehomie's viral video. She noticed the code reading “SSSS”.

This code meant that she had to undergo additional security checks by the TSA, which meant that she had to desperately search for bags, swabs, and ultimately lead to an unexpected separation from her boyfriend before the flight.

Viewers were flooded with comments, desperately trying to answer, “What does that mean?” “Is that random?” asked another.

“If they delay you, will they cover the flight you missed?” he thought another thing. Others said, “Me and my BF got the SSS when we went to San Francisco!”

Another agreed, adding, “This happened to my father. We were forever late!” “I always get it, so we arrive two hours earlier just in case,” she shared another.

The Travel Republic has revealed why stamps will appear on your selected boarding pass and how to avoid unnecessary stress at the airport.

“SSSS” stamp stands for Security Screening Selection. This means that passengers are flagged for additional security checks before boarding. This includes extra bag searches, swabs and questions, which could lead to potential delays at the airport.

The security process applies primarily to flights to or within the United States, but is not exclusive to travel in the United States. If passengers are not prepared, a four-letter code can lead to longer airport delays, additional bag searches, and even missed flights.

Travel experts added that last minute bookings can be landed with “SSSS” stamps. The exact selection process remains somewhat mysterious, but is usually linked to random selection, travel history, last minute bookings, one-way or international trips to specific destinations.

Those who raise the flag and have travel details and frequent freelance activities may also be more likely to receive stamps. Preparing in advance will help you avoid unnecessary delays and allow security to take the journey as stress-free as possible.

Top tips for passing additional security screening with minimal hassle:

Arrival early – Additional screenings can take up to 10 minutes or more hours before your flight.

Be collaborative – Security checks can be frustrating, but staying calm and following instructions can help speed things up.

Have a document ready – Easy access to multiple checks for boarding pass and passport.

Know what to expect – don't be caught off guard as you will likely face extra bag searches, hand swabs and possible questions.

Pack your bags properly – use a clear pouch for liquids, maintain access to your electronics, avoid overpacked luggage, and make sure your bags are security-compliant and easy to search.
