It's December. Out-of-office replies are piling up, holiday playlists are taking over the airwaves, and most of us have already spent half the holidays in our heads. Whether you're daydreaming about a beachside vacation or want to make the most of your vacation, there's probably one thing you're probably already gearing up for. It's travel insurance. These are some of the perks of going on a family vacation.
But what about all the business trips you've taken this year and those you'll be taking once January rolls around? How prepared are you for the unexpected?
Karen Botha, Sales Manager at Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC), sees gaps all the time. “The biggest mistake we see is travelers relying on complimentary or no-cost coverage thinking it’s all-inclusive coverage,” she explains.
If your credit card coverage is insufficient
Business travel is rarely easy. If something goes wrong, the risk is much higher than on a holiday. If you miss your flight, it's not just an inconvenience, it's a deal at risk. Imagine arriving for a presentation and your luggage never arrives. That outfit you picked out for tomorrow's meeting? It's still circling around the airport somewhere. While credit card coverage may offer some protection, it often falls short of what business travelers really need. Comprehensive travel insurance's baggage delay cover covers your immediate necessities, from a spare suit to basic toiletries, so you can maintain a professional appearance even if your bag goes missing.
Your health shouldn't be a gamble
The last thing you want to think about is falling seriously ill overseas. Business travel can take you anywhere from glittering urban centers to high-risk remote locations. Even if you are someone who takes every precaution, health emergencies happen.
Botha recalls a serious case. “A business traveler contracted cerebral malaria in Sierra Leone. Medical facilities were not equipped to deal with the severity of his symptoms. Fortunately, his travel insurance included medical transport. He was immediately airlifted to an appropriate medical facility in a neighboring country.
Let's think about that for a moment. If you don't have the right insurance, you're not only facing huge medical bills, you're also risking your life. Even less dramatic situations, such as when you need emergency medical care or a prescription from a foreign country, can quickly become an expensive hardship.
Also, what if you have a pre-existing condition? Don't assume you'll be covered automatically. “If you know you have a medical condition, make sure it is included in your insurance cover,” advises Botha. “Without that, even mild recurrences can turn into major problems.”
When airlines shrug their shoulders
Flight delays are almost commonplace these days. Yes, the airline will support you with the basics. They may even give you a meal ticket and maybe even a hotel room. But what happens in a domino disaster: a missed connection, an emergency rebooking, a series of plans interrupted?
This is where the right travel insurance comes in handy. “Travel insurance can cover the cost of your outbound flight if you arrive late and miss your connecting flight,” Botha says. Remember, you must have at least 3 hours between flights to qualify.
Your laptop is worth more than you think
When you travel for work, your bag becomes more than just a suitcase, it becomes your mobile office. Laptops, trade samples, or specialized tools aren't just packed for convenience. They are essential to getting the job done. But there's a catch. It's not always as covered as you think. “Most travel insurance policies have a one-item limit for purchasing expensive equipment,” Botha says. So, if your laptop is worth R30,000 but your insurance limit is R5,000, you will be responsible for the rest of the bill. ”
Would you like to trade samples? Covered by most travel policies. What tools are you using? That may be another story. Botha recommends double-checking your insurance to make sure all your work essentials are protected. Also, if something goes wrong, such as your laptop being stolen or damaged, you'll need to act quickly. “Report any loss to your local authorities immediately. A detailed report is required to process your claim,” she advises.
When one size doesn't fit all
Not all policies are built for every type of traveler. If you work outside of a typical office environment, such as on a construction site, on a remote field project, or in a location that involves manual labor, you need more than standard coverage.
This is where a good travel management company (TMC) can be your safety net. “Some business travelers think that insurance will cover everything, but that doesn't necessarily match the actual nature of their work,” says Mamie, Production Operations Manager at FCM. Mafojane says. “Our role is to ensure that the right policies are in place, whether we're heading into the boardroom or heading to the actual project site.”
“Having the right insurance means you have peace of mind knowing that everything has been thought of when you work or travel,” says Mafojane. “With the right advice and coverage, you can focus on what really matters: your job.” “We do more than just book flights and hotels,” adds Mafojane. “We make sure you are protected every step of the way. From choosing the right insurance to providing 24/7 support, we focus on making business travel as seamless and safe as possible. I am.
