Many African destinations are seeing an increase in tourism. However, three countries north of the huge continent actually make the mark. Hotspots such as Egypt and Morocco continue to be some of the most popular destinations for travelers around the world, but countries such as Algeria, Libya and Mauritania are also making waves in the world of travel and tourism.
Adventure Travel Company, Untamed Borders, revealed that all three countries have implemented e-Visa systems to make tourists easier to welcome. Algeria is already making progress with a new system as it has increased by 10% from around 3.5 million tourists compared to 2023. Mauritania and Libya could experience similar boosts as the outcome of the system. However, there are currently several travel warnings in the three countries.
The Foreign, Federal Development Office (FCDO), which provides travel advice to Britons, currently advises all trips in Algeria, all trips to parts of Libya, and all trips essential to other parts of the country, as well as all trips in Mauritania. This means that while UK holiday makers can visit certain regions in three countries, it is absolutely tough to check out Gov.uk and read all the travel information provided in advance.
However, three African countries seem to be set to welcome travelers and offer special experiences. James Wilcox, founder of Untouched Borders, said:
“North Africa includes many rarely visited landscapes and communities with fascinating stories and history, and their lives follow ancient trade routes, mountain paths and desert views.”
Algeria has many historic sites, including ancient Roman ruins of Gemira, Timgad and Tipaza. Basilica Notre Dame D'Afrique is well worth a visit as Tripadvisor marks it as the number one in the country.
In Libya, the country boasts not only cultural attractions but also a variety of historical attractions. Leptis Magna, the Unseco World Heritage site and one of the most preserved Roman cities, is a must-see.
For nature lovers, Bank Dal Ala National Park in Mauritania is also a world heritage site and is attracting attention as “one of the world's most important zones for bird nests.” Sites with the embarrassment of wildlife-diversity species are the perfect destination for embracing African biodiversity.
With a surge in tourists drawn to across North Africa, the opportunity to experience a “really unique” holiday away from the massive crowds is becoming more challenging.
Many North African countries in the region have received a record number of visitors over the past year.
However, the three countries are just a few examples of African places waiting to be explored. They boast many in common that make incredible holiday options, but one of the very important things to note is that they all offer the opportunity to “really enjoy the authentic Saharan experience” even without many others.
