The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelers to carry six important documents when driving abroad to avoid unexpected fines. According to guidance on the gov.uk website, this advice is particularly relevant to those planning to drive, as outlined in the “Transportation Risks” section. The site emphasizes that Luxembourg's Road Traffic Act is strictly enforced and fines are possible for minor violations.

Additionally, “You can use your UK Photocard driver's license to drive in Luxembourg for a year. If you still have a paper driver's license, you will need to renew your photocard license or get the correct version of your International Driving Permit (IDP).”

They should note that the minimum age to drive a car is 18 and if you plan to hire a car, these types of car companies often have strict requirements for their customers, such as “in many cases, one year of driving experience, minimum age, and maintaining an IDP.”

In addition to this, you will need to bring these five documents into the vehicle or face a fine.

License Vehicle Registration Documentcar Insurance Certificate Certificate Taxation Certificate

You also need to have a passport at all times, whether you are in the car or not. Government groups say this is because it can be easily crossed to neighboring countries without realizing it.

If you are taking you to the road, but you are not the person you are driving, you still need to be careful. If you need a taxi, it is worth remembering that it is always safer to use an official taxi with a clearly marked taxi stand. Official taxis will show you the price list. Check the price per kilometer before entering a taxi.

They will conclude by revealing that you may be charged more by some taxis on a particular day. “Drivers are permitted to charge additional fees in the evening and Sunday,” they confirm.

Do I need a GB or UK sticker to drive in Luxembourg?

As RAC Drive stated, “From September 28, 2021, the identification mark (or domestic identifier) displayed on UK registered vehicles operating overseas will be changed from GB to UK.

This means that a vehicle registered in the UK must display a letter “UK” when it is driven in Luxembourg. The identifier can be incorporated into the vehicle number plate (along with the union flag) or as a separate sticker. Please note that vehicles featuring the GB letter along with the European Golden Star Council are no longer effective for driving abroad. ”

    UK stickers and license plates

According to Gov.uk, authorities have always urged drivers to “display British identifiers when driving UK registered vehicles overseas.” This is “required”. They say, “If your license plate contains the UK identifier for the Union Flag (also known as Union Jack), you don't need a UK sticker.”

“If you're in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you'll need to display UK stickers no matter what your license plate is,” he concludes. However, if your license plate has one of the following, you will need to clearly display a UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle:

English, Scotland, or Wales Union Flag only for numbers and letters Euro Simbola flag and GB Identifier – No flag or identifier
