Johannesburg/Tanzania – 16 January 2025 – South African Airways (SAA) is counting down to resume daily flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Monday 20 January 2025.
“This flight is more than just a milestone for SAA to connect Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam through air travel. It is a bridge that connects two of Africa's most influential economies and strengthens the friendship between our two countries.” said Professor John Lamola, SAA's Interim Chief Executive Officer.
“This will bring together industries, communities and resources, unlocking greater prosperity, fostering cooperation and creating new opportunities for trade, investment and development for both our economies and the people of South Africa and Tanzania. Masu.”
broader economic growth
Dar es Salaam is East Africa's largest city by population and an important regional economic and logistics hub. It is also the gateway to popular tourist spots in the area.
South Africa accounts for a significant portion of foreign direct investment in Tanzania, and the two countries have strong trade in agricultural products, precious metals, chemicals and machinery.
Lamola said the relaunch represents SAA's strategic commitment to strengthening the airline's presence across Africa.
“SAA's regional networks have emerged as top performers and contribute significantly to SAA Group's revenues. More importantly, these regional connections are critical to South Africa's broader economic growth.” he stated.
flight schedule
Daily flights depart from Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport at 10pm (SAST) and arrive at Dar es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport at 2:30am (EAT). Daily flights from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg depart at 5:10am (EAT) and arrive in Johannesburg at 7:55am (SAST). Dar es Salaam is 1 hour earlier than Johannesburg.
Lamola said the seven-a-week round trip schedule is designed to accommodate both point-to-point and connecting passengers.
SAA regional network integration
In November last year, SAA expanded its services to Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia) from 10 and 7 weekly flights to 12, respectively. Flights to Lagos (Nigeria) and Accra (Ghana) will be increased from three to four times a week, while SAA operates five times a week to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). SAA also began flying to Lubumbashi, the mining hub of the DRC, in November.
Additionally, SAA increased its intercontinental flights to Perth, Australia to five times a week from January 7 this year.
