Nairobi-based venture studio Purple Elephant Ventures (PEV) has secured $4.5 million in seed funding in one of Africa's largest tourism technology funding rounds. The funding, backed by investors including Clear Creek Investment BV, Klister Corp. and Fede Pirzo-Biroli of Playfair Capital, will support PEV's mission to position Africa as a global leader in regenerative tourism. By building innovative travel technology solutions, PEV aims to build an environmentally sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism industry across the continent.
The venture studio has already launched five tourism-focused startups, including Nomad Africa, which promotes local travel, and Kijani Supplies, a green sourcing platform for hospitality. Other ventures such as Zafari, PowerTrip and JOIN Africa are addressing challenges in reservations, energy efficiency and safari guide support. With new funding, PEV plans to expand its portfolio and develop cutting-edge solutions aimed at reducing travel's ecological footprint, enhancing biodiversity and fostering sustainable livelihoods for local communities is.
