The Ministry of Transport announced that Tambo International Airport has secured 121.1 million liters of jet fuel, averting potential operational disruptions. The arrangement will ensure uninterrupted flight schedules until the National Oil Refiners restart, which is the resumption of the South African (NATREF) refinery at the end of February 2025. The airport, which requires 3.6 million liters of jet fuel each day, faced challenges that prompted it to refuel elsewhere, such as Windhoek and King Shaka Airport.
Transport Minister Barbara Creasy has convened an emergency meeting with stakeholders, including the Fuel Industries Association of South Africa (FIASA) and Airport Corporations, including SASOL (ACSA), to address the crisis. As part of the solution, additional jet fuel is being imported through the Port of Durban and logistics are currently in place to ensure timely delivery or tambo. ACSA is also working to establish fuel reserves to mitigate future supply disruptions caused by unforeseen events. Minister Creasy expressed his gratitude to passengers and industry stakeholders for their patience during the disruption.
