Cargo specialist Challenge Group aims to become Europe's first operator of refurbished Boeing 777-300ER freighters through its Malta operation.
Challenge Group has revealed that it will lease another twin jet, named the 777-300ERSF, through an agreement with Ireland-based lender AerCap.
The 777-300ERSF is an improved version developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, initially in collaboration with US lessor GECAS before being acquired by AerCap.
Challenge Group also operates in Israel, Belgium and Malta, each with dedicated fleets.
The airline recently announced that it will expand its Belgian division with another 747-400 freighter, bringing the group's total freighter fleet to 10, with six 747s and four 767s.
Challenge Group director Yossi Shukroon said the lease of the 777-300ERSF, which will be registered on the Maltese registry, was a “historic moment” for the company.
“With their unparalleled capabilities, these aircraft will enable us to meet the growing demands of global trade and strengthen our position as a key enabler of supply chains,” he added.
Challenge Group's Maltese fleet currently consists of three converted 767-300ER freighters.
Israel Aerospace Industries first flew a modified 777-300ERSF equipped with GE Aerospace's GE90 engine in March 2023.
