The beautiful European city is said to be one of the happiest places in the world, but it receives far fewer visitors than the continent's famous tourist spots.

The Danish city of Aarhus, located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, is known for its beautiful waterfront and numerous museums and art collections.

It was named the happiest city in the world in the Happy City Index 2024, which takes into account factors such as mobility, green space and education. Take a look at its picturesque cityscape and charming cobblestone streets and it's easy to see why.

Highlights include the picturesque Latin Quarter, filled with boutiques selling handmade goods, a variety of bars, restaurants and beautiful homes.

There's also a rich art scene, including the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, which has five galleries, an entire floor dedicated to installation art, and stunning rooftop views.

Meanwhile, visitors rave about the city's botanical garden, Den Gamle By, an open-air museum that recreates historic Danish life.

A TripAdvisor reviewer who visited last April gave the attraction a five-star rating and said, “The restoration efforts, collection of many objects, and attention to detail leave us speechless and… It's still very thought-provoking to this day.”

They added that visiting this place is “in fact a must for the youth of our country”.

Aarhus Cathedral, a Romanesque cathedral that is the tallest church in the country, is also said to be worth a visit.

One tourist who visited in 2023 said the centuries-old structure was “beautiful inside and out.”

A direct flight from London to Aarhus takes around 2 hours and is also a short distance from the UK.

Ryanair offers the only direct flight from London Stansted to Aarhus, with return fares starting from around £35.

There is a direct bus from the airport to Aarhus city center, which takes approximately 50 minutes.

You can also fly to Billund, the home of Lego, and take a bus from there. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
