For travelers, dealing with last-minute flight cancellations can be extremely frustrating, whether you're returning home on vacation, traveling for work, or trying to catch Taylor Swift's highly anticipated Elas tour in time. That's it.
Cancellations are often justified due to unsafe flight conditions, such as hazardous weather, safety concerns, or technical problems with the aircraft.
However, some cancellations are within the airline's control, such as those caused by staff shortages, schedule conflicts, maintenance delays, etc., and could have been addressed with better planning.

Dana Air had the highest cancellation rate of any airline tracked by Cirium, after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority suspended its operations in April 2024 following a runway incident. This is the main cause. As of January 2025, the airline has suspended operations pending a safety and financial audit.
Most of the airlines with the highest cancellation rates are based in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa regions, including one North American airline (Cape Airlines) and one European airline (Ural Airlines). Only one company is included.
In 2024, Ural Airlines was added to the European Union's sanctions list for allegedly supporting Russian military operations in Ukraine by transporting military personnel and establishing a special ticket sales scheme with the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Smaller airlines connecting remote and island regions, such as Air Seychelles, WinAir (Caribbean), Air Austral (Réunion Island and Indian Ocean Islands), and Cape Air (US and Caribbean), face weather-related issues. This often results in higher cancellation rates. Infrastructure and operational complexity.
Indonesian airlines such as Lion Air, Wings Air and Batik Air are grappling with similar challenges of operating in an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and frequent extreme weather events such as monsoons and volcanic eruptions. .
