Zambia Airports Corporation (ZACL) has confirmed that Solwezi Airport, the North West Province's main aviation facility, remains fully operational despite concerns over nearby gully erosion. ZACL Managing Director Ngoza Matakara assured that thorough inspections and mitigation measures have been taken and the erosion will not affect the runway or disrupt flight schedules. The canyon, located near the airport, is being closely monitored and experts from the Geological Survey and Water Department are working to resolve the issue.
Plans are being made to carry out restoration work this year, following a detailed assessment in 2024. Additionally, ZACL has announced long-term plans to build a new greenfield airport in Solwezi, with a feasibility study currently being conducted led by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics. This development is in line with ZACL’s commitment to ensuring safe and efficient air travel infrastructure to support Zambia’s connectivity within and beyond the region.
