There are concerns after Crete, Greece, crashed into a strong earthquake on Thursday, May 22nd, on 6.19am Greece.
According to the Geographical Mechanics Institute at the National Astronomical Observatory of Athens, the earthquake took place at a depth of 69 kilometers, 56 kilometers northeast of Heraklion on Crete. The trembling was felt violent across the island, especially Chania and Retymno, as well as other nearby islands and even on mainland Greece.
Europe's Medieval Earthquake Centre (EMSC) issued a tsunami warning, urging people in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France and Portuguese to follow guidance from local emergency services. No injuries or damage were initially reported after the earthquake, but Greek firefighters announced that all units on Crete are in enhanced alerts.
Several people, including British tourists from Crete and nearby islands, took them to social media to share their experiences.
One of these people was Nicole Steel. Nicole Steele enjoyed her holiday with her husband Aher and her two children when she woke up from the earthquake.
“We woke up again behind 6am this morning,” Nicole told Tiktok viewers. “It was absolutely horrifying. The last earthquake was like a bit of a shaking. This earthquake was shaking, probably for about 10 seconds. Everyone woke up.”
She goes on and says she is rushing out of bed and preparing to leave the hotel to wake her two sons up. After that, they were living a higher life on the island, so they walked to a friend's apartment.
Nicole said:
“It was very scary. Last time it was scary, but this time it was scary,” she said. Last week he mentioned other earthquakes that occurred near Kassos, another island in southern Greece.
“I had two earthquakes last week and I just want to go home safely, I just want to leave.
Also on Crete was Charlotte Lilly. Charlotte Lily had taken him to Tiktok to share his experiences of waking up due to the earthquake.
“I've just had an earthquake. I'm absolutely petrified,” she said at the beginning of the video. “I was literally asleep. I woke up the shaking. I thought the TV would go down.”
She then said that her partner Jack and son Rico were still sleeping in their room.
“What a god, I'm so scared,” she said, looking around.
She added:
Several people took him to the comments section of the video, and people questioned whether they still wanted to go to Greece on their booked holiday.
“Did you have more earthquakes last week? We usually leave for Hersonissos on Monday, but I'm afraid,” one person asked.
Another wrote: “We'll be going to Rhodes in two weeks, and I'm very scared,” the third states:
But others weren't that afraid. The fourth added: “This is where we are and this is where this happened. All locals said they don't worry because it's not gradualized and Crete is one of the best trending places they have.”
