Weymouth crowned the UK's best beach earlier this year. Now, summer is going well and truly ongoing. I thought it was the perfect time to visit the area to see what all the hype was.
The beach along the Dorset Stretch on the Jurassic Coast has also been named Europe's 20th Best Beach. This is the fourth consecutive year that has won the top spot at the Tripadvisor Travellers 'Choice Awards. In addition to the long and wide Golden Beach, Weymouth's seaside features many other family-friendly attractions, including observation wheels, donkey rides and entertainment.
However, what stood out for me when I visited was not the scope of the attractions. Instead, what quickly hit me was how pretty the beach and the wider seaside were.
It's depressing to visit the beach during the summer and find trash littered. The Marine Conservation Association recently reported that plastic pollution increased by nearly 10% last year, with over three-quarters of garbage collected during volunteer beach cleans.
An average of 170 items of garbage was reported per 100 metres of the UK coastline, but the situation at Weymouth could not be far from this upsetting statistic. The area was clean and well maintained, making it definitely useful to attract visitors throughout the summer season.
It also had a friendly atmosphere, with family and friends relaxing on the beach and making the most of the attraction. The area is safe and the beaches are protected by rnli lifeguards during peak season.
The number of “brown flag beaches,” rated as “poor” by the Environment Agency, has also skyrocketed throughout the UK in recent years. But Weymouth defied that trend and was awarded the Seaside Award this year by Keep Britain Tidy.
I wasn't in the ocean, but it certainly looked attractive. The ocean was blue in colour and looked very refreshing on a hot afternoon.
The Seaside Award recognizes visitors a clean, well-managed beach experience. “We are delighted to receive the prestigious Seaside Award for another year. Weymouth Beach is a great resource for our residents,” said Jane Biscom, the town clerk at Weymastown Council.
No pollution incidents have been reported at Weymouth Beach this year, according to the Environment Department, Food and Rural Affairs Department. Meanwhile, the latest classification of water is “good” based on samples taken between 2021 and 2024.
Like the beaches and the ocean, the Weymouth Esplanade was clean and clean during my visit. This was a great place to go for a walk alongside many cafes, restaurants and craft shops.
Running parallel to Weymouth Beach, the promenade is lined with elegant Georgian buildings that have been maintained for many years. It's a great place to walk, relax and enjoy the amazing coastal views.
Visit Dorset said: “Weymouth Beach has received many acclaim for its management, cleanliness, information and safety, including the Blue Flag, Seaside Awards and Quality Co-Store Awards.
“In addition, it is consistently recognized as one of the UK's top beaches by the Marine Conservation Society's Good Beach Guide and TripAdvisor.”
