Famous for its breathtaking scenery, sustainability initiatives and rich heritage, Somerset West's Welgerègenwein Estate has opened bookings for a new, day, 12km guided hike.
The first hike takes place on Saturday, March 15th, and is then offered twice a month, allowing weather.
Hikers enjoy access to an area of the 3,000 hectares of property, which is not normally open to the public. There you can discover the diverse flora and fauna of the real estate.
The route is set along the spectacular backgrounds of Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountain range.
Manor Houses and Gardens: Vergelegen is a local heritage, with the route beginning with historic precincts where hikers admire the lush gardens and beautiful homes. Lourens River and Orchards: The trail leads to Lourens River, a natural environment in which part of the land is protected, and passes through the orchards. Nguni Cattle Grazing Area: The route counts around 400 native cattle with spectacular multicolored skins and about 400 native cattle with resident Bontebok, and herd grazing areas of obedient Nguni cattle herds Continued in. Game Camp: Hike alongside a fenced game camp. Wildlife can be seen such as Eland, Relaucaga, Black Wild Tee Beast and small antelope. Shan Pants Lee: This marks the end of the hiking trail. On the hiking trail, weather-allowed hikers are treated to Bergenregencap classics and wine tasting glasses, enjoying views of the surrounding mountain ranges and fake bays. Vineyards and Wine Cellars: The hikers are gaming vehicles and are transported to nearby hilltop wine cellars for a basement tour.
They then enjoy a three-course, La Carte lunch, along with wine, in a stable bistro style restaurant. The full cost of R2900/person includes brand caps and water bottles as well as a bottle of Florence Rosé wine to take home.
The tour is led by tourism expert Frank Dwyer, an experienced hiking guide with a passion deeply rooted to showcase the natural beauty and rich heritage of South Africa. Dwyer was born and raised in Somerset West, where his father farmed in the 1960s and 1970s, and was an early appreciation for the local landscape, history, wine and culture.
The route is not difficult, but there are intense uphills and downhills where hikers need to pay attention to loose gravel. Hikers are advised to wear appropriate footwear and hiking boots.
