The joint report by the United Nations Tourism and World Tourism Union will fully harness the potential to encourage governments to prioritize comprehensive policy, regulatory frameworks and governance models, promote shared prosperity in tourism, and help them achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study identifies tourism as a powerful catalyst (SDG 10) to reduce inequality, particularly through community development, job creation, education, environmental management, and gender inclusion.
The report is based on case studies in China, Albania, Indonesia, Jordan, Peru, Rwanda and Vanuatu, showing how the national strategy was targeted helped communities benefit fairly from tourism. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary of Tourism, called for a transition to regional-centric tourism development, underscored the need for action in just five years to reach the targets of the SDG in 2030. Recommendations include reinvesting tourism-generating income into social infrastructure, strengthening comprehensive planning, and using tourism as a tool for poverty reduction and sustainable growth.
