The University of South Africa (UNISA) and Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) have been set up to formalize the partnership through the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), showing great progress in advance of interdisciplinary research in air traffic management. It is anchored in the university's catalytic niche area for aviation and aviation research. Institutional priorities defended by the Vice Principal's Office: Research, Graduate Research, Innovation, Commercialization, This project aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration between academic and industry.
The partnership, which began and launched in early 2024, aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry in the aviation sector. This enthusiastic scholarship project combines ATNS operational and technical expertise with UNISA's strengths in research, education and innovation, taking into account the key role of aviation in supporting economic growth and connection, serving as a shocking model of academic and industry collaboration.
Together, the agency is promoting a transformational approach to addressing the dynamic needs of the South African aviation sector. By aligning academic theories with real-world practice, the partnership positions UNISA and ATNS as leaders in the joint development of sustainable solutions for the future of aviation education, training and innovation in the region.
Continued consultations are underway to coordinate training qualifications offered by the ATNS Aviation Training Academy with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). These discussions include formal accreditation of short learning programs and the potential development of diplomas in collaboration with UNISA's Academic Planning Office and the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET).
As the quarterly UNISA Engagement Scholarship Report is supported by subcomat updates and regular progress reviews, a structured monitoring and assessment framework has been established to track progress and impact. These efforts are directed towards ensuring the long-term institutionalization and sustainability of partnerships.
