UNESCO has announced a $8 million project to improve groundwater management in Tanzania and Kenya, focusing on preserving the forests of Mount Kilimanjaro, and is a key source of water for over 2 million people. Funded by the Global Environmental Facilities (GEF) and implemented in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the initiative combines scientific research with community efforts to strengthen local water security.

The project will include mapping local aquifer systems to improve groundwater management. UNESCO Director Audrey Azurey highlighted the urgency to protect the Kilimanjaro crucible, and Tanzanians and Kenyan officials reaffirmed the country's commitment to sustainable water solutions. The initiative is expected to support long-term water conservation and alleviate seasonal shortages affecting hundreds of thousands of people in the region.
