The coastline, distinctive streets and rich historic charm have made this north coastal town quietly build a loyal following, but it has flew under the radar for many tourists.
Places like Whitby, Scarborough and Blackpool often dominate the coastal vacation list, but this little-known gem is now officially recognized as one of the UK's most underrated destinations.
According to a new ranking published by Betway, it analyzed more than 50 towns across the country based on independent shops, cultural landmarks, restaurants, live music events, the popularity of Tiktok, and even the number of summer temperatures. In fact, it was named the fourth most underrated town in the entire UK and the highest spot in northern England.
Just eight miles from Newcastle, this vibrant coastal town is no secret to locals, but retains an air of discovery for many visitors.
Tynemouth is ingrained in history, with impressive ruins of Tynemouth monastery and castles dramatically perched above the sea. Granted ratings of 4 stars or more by almost every visitor, the site dates back to 2,000 years, home to monks, kings and soldiers, offering panoramic views of the North Sea.
But this is more than just a place for history lovers. Tynemouth beaches, especially King Edward Bay and Long Sands – are some of the most beloved in the UK. Voting regularly among the best urban beaches in Europe, attracting both surfers, dog pedestrians, cold water swimmers and families.
Over the summer months, long stretches of sand and clean water make them an idyllic coastal retreat, even if the average summer temperature is only 14.3°C.
The town also features a lively music and art scene, with 84 live music events scheduled.
Tynemouth Market, held every weekend at Victorian-era metro stations, is another important draw packed with vintage discoveries, vinyl records, books and food stalls.
And while town may not be overflowing with restaurants, there are no restaurants that are far above their weight. 67% are rated 4 stars or above.
Despite its many attractions, the town is relatively maintained under the social media radar, with only 8,573 Tiktok posts.
In Betway's research, Hastings came in first place overall thanks to its booming music scene and strong foodie culture.
The top ten also included fascinating coastal and historic spots such as Folkestone, Berry St. Edmunds and Weymouth.
