The UK has introduced new travel admission fees to allow foreign visitors to enter the country for a short period of time. As of April 2, 2025, visitors to the UK will need an electronic travel authorization (ETA) to travel to the country if they do not require a visa for a short stay of up to six months, or if they do not already have UK immigration status. ETA is essentially a digital permit for travel – it is not a visa or tax, and does not allow entry into the UK. Simply allow travel to the country.
This system is similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) in the US. This requires pre-trip permission for visitors who do not require a visa. Citizens of the UK and Ireland, as well as those who have status under the EU reconciliation system, do not need an ETA.
It costs £16 to get an ETA. This will remain valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever is the first).
The Ministry of Home Affairs explains: “Eligible Europeans can apply for an ETA and must travel to the UK from Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
“This expansion follows the successful deployment of ETAs last year to all non-eligible non-European citizens, including visitors from the US, Canada and Australia who currently need an ETA to travel. Approximately 1.1 million visitors have been issued ETAs and will benefit from a smoother and easier trip to the UK for shorter future trips.
“ETAS will help to strengthen the security of our immigration system and keep our country safe by screening people before they step into the UK.”
ETA applications can be created via the UK ETA app or the gov.uk website. You will need to provide contact and passport details, valid photos and answer a series of questions.
According to the Home Office, most applicants will receive an automatic decision in a few minutes when applying via the UK ETA app, but people are advised to allow three business days to take into account the small number of cases that require further review.
Immigration and Citizenship Minister Sheema Malhotra added: “Securing our borders is the foundation of the UK government's plan of change, and by digitizing the immigration system, we will pave the way to contactless UK borders, allowing visitors to enjoy a seamless travel experience of the future.
“The global expansion of ETA cements our commitment to strengthening security through technology and innovation.”
