On the morning of April 1st, 2025, a small plane crash occurred in Durban North, near Virginia Airport. Despite the impact of the crash, the two passengers survived and were taken to the nearest medical facility. An investigation was held to determine the cause of the accident.
Emergency personnel arrive at the scene
According to East Coast Radio News, ALS paramedic spokesman Garrith Jamieson confirmed emergency services responded quickly to the scene. “Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and were able to find the Ethekwini Fire Station already in attendance and were shown in the tree where (The) Light Aircraft was found,” he said. The plane was found in trees near the airport.
Survivors from small plane crashes were transported for medical care
According to Jamieson, both individuals on board the ship whose names remained and survived the accident. “The paramedics were informed that two residents who were on the plane at the time of the crash had been transported personally for medical care,” he said. It remains unclear how serious their injuries are.
An investigation into a crash crash on a small plane is underway
The site was quickly taken over to the South African Police Services Bureau to conduct an official investigation. “This scene was discontinued by SAPS so that necessary authorities could investigate the cause of this incident,” Jamieson confirmed. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and other relevant agencies are expected to lead the investigation.
The accident has been added to the list of small plane accidents in South Africa, raising concerns about aviation safety. During a media briefing, Transport Minister Shindisiwe Chikunga expressed concern over the recent increase in crash drops of small planes in South Africa.
“As we head towards this 2023/24 fiscal year closure, we have recorded 97 accidents so far. We expect these numbers to be slightly lower than the previous reporting period, but the number of fatal accidents has increased to 13 (13). Details of the Durban North Crash will be released once the investigation is unfolded.
