Altezza Travel, a leading Kilimanjaro tour operator based in Moshi, has announced a new ethical climbing guide to address the shocking increase in accountability in adventure tourism. The framework, released on April 1, 2025, is because Tanzania welcomes more than 60,000 climbers to Mount Kilimanjaro this year, raising concerns about the environmental impact and the welfare of mountain crew members. This guide promotes fair work practices, environmental management and prioritization of local economic interests. It has established itself as a standard for both operators and international partners.
The initiative includes practical guidance such as selecting a certified operator, partnering with organizations such as the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), and encouraging direct bookings with Tanzanian companies. Travellife accredited and the region's largest taxpayer, Altezza aims to set new industry norms through collaboration with KPAP. With the growing global scrutiny of sustainability and work ethic in tourism, this guide could serve as a blueprint for destinations facing similar challenges, highlighting the need for transparent, ethical practices across the adventure travel sector.
