TPConnects and the AFRAA release whitepaper fosters digital transformation of aviation in Africa, highlighting NDC adoption, cost challenges and modernization strategies.
Dubai/Nairobi – A pivotal step of African Aviation, TPConnects Technologies and the African Aviation Association (AFRAA), “African Next Flight: Unlocking Modern Airlines” offers the opportunity to face realities, challenges.
TPConnects – Afraa Airline Distribution Survey 2025 formed the basis for the white paper and collected responses from diverse groups of African careers. The survey highlights that 81% of airlines carry fewer than 2 million passengers per year, while 80% operate a fleet of less than 15 aircraft. High distribution costs, limited adoption of NDCs, and technical barriers are still widespread, but there is strong momentum in change. Over 40% of airlines plan or implement NDC initiatives.
Key insights from this study include:
Distribution cost reductions are the top priority of all airlines surveyed, and are cited as high GDS and unsustainable. The adoption of NDCs has just begun. Almost half of airlines do not have NDC capabilities, but a key set of airlines is actively planning or implementing NDCs. A digital transformation is underway. While 60% of airlines still rely on on-premises systems, there is an increasing cloud shift and investment into digital retail. Agents and modernization processes are crucial to success, and training and collaboration are considered essential enablers.
“Modern airline retailing is more than technology: providing control, agility and value to both our customers and our partners,” said Giuseppe Candela, vice president of global sales at TPConnects Technologies. “Our joint research and whitepaper findings with AFRAA provide a clear snapshot of where African Aviation stands and where it is heading. Airlines on the continent want to have stronger control over distribution, offers and customer relationships. Data shows they will support TPONTINES AT AFRONIATION and Digital Transformation while the challenges remain.
Abdérahmane Berthé, Executive Director Afraa, commented: “Insights from this paper are essential as African airlines navigate a new era of distribution. By adopting digital transformation and modern retail strategies, members can reduce costs, improve agility and make African markets better. Innovators – Support strengthening the African distribution ecosystem, improving the traveler experience and ultimately promote sustainable growth of African Airlines.”
White papers are available for download on the TPConnects and the AFRAA website. TPConnects recently presented its findings at the 13th AFRAA Air Stakeholders Convention in Kigali, hosting a masterclass to support airlines on their transformation journey.
