The Tourism Minister points out in a recent update by the US State Department to South Africa's Travel Advisory. We respect the sovereignty of all countries that provide guidance to citizens traveling abroad. He also acknowledged the recent meetings between President Ramaphosa and President Trump and subsequent media reports.
However, it is important to provide a broader context and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all visitors to our country.
South Africa is one of the most popular and rewarding destinations in the world, known for its natural beauty, cultural diversity and the warm hospitality of its people. Although challenges such as crime exist, as in many countries around the world, the vast majority of international visitors travel safely and set out with positive and rich experience.
Visitor safety is and remains a national priority. It is being addressed actively through a series of coordinated efforts between the government, law enforcement, the tourism sector and the local community. Our tourism infrastructure is robust and resilient, with several established safety measures including:
Improved security presence in key tourist nodes, supported by trained tourism monitors stationed at popular attractions and visitors hotspots. Continuing cooperation between governments, law enforcement agencies and the private sector to ensure aggressive safety monitoring and prompt incident response.
It is worth highlighting that travel demand from the US remains strong. In 2024, arrivals from the US returned to pre-pandemic levels, with the US surpassing the UK as South Africa's largest source market. Only for the first four months of 2025
South Africa welcomed 111,491 visitors from the US. It reaffirmed the enduring appeal of the destination and the strong market trust.
Travelers understand that there may be concerns and encourage all visitors to exercise the same level of vigilance and awareness when visiting international destinations. It also reports on South Africa with global accuracy and balance to media outlets and government agencies, recognizing the distinction between isolated incidents and the broader reality experienced by millions of safe and satisfied travelers.
We are closely involved with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation on this issue and want to reassure all travelers that South Africa is committed to ensuring that a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone visiting.
We look forward to continuing to welcome travelers from the US and around the world to share the richness of our landscapes, the depth of our culture, and the warmth of our people.
