United Airlines recently announced it will expand its African network by introducing new long-distance services from Washington Dulles Airport to Cape Town International Airport. This route was released in November 2022 and was operational three times a week, making it a huge success.
United Airlines’ second African route, which connects Newark to Johannesburg, has been open daily since June 2021, and this route will also be expanded by the airline.
In 2024, arrivals from the United States rose above 430 000 compared to 2023, up by 21,000 or 5,2%. Further testimony of the impact of direct flights in 2023 was introduced in 2023, with arrivals from the US exceeding 409,000 and 1,111,000, exceeding 37.4% of South Africa.
