When it comes to choosing a destination for travel, we all have our preferences. Whether weather forecasts or clear skies on nearby beaches, wandering through the ancient city perfectly in castles, sticking to your home and choosing to go camping trips outdoors in the UK, there are a variety of holidays to choose from.
There are also plenty of things that can ruin your holiday, from delayed flights to noisy hotel rooms and sudden heavy rain. More and more you may find yourself preferring something that is not full of tourist crowds. And choosing more unusual destinations and hidden gems is one way to avoid this. It is also often much more expensive than a regular holiday hotspot, making it a great option if you're traveling on a budget. But if you're looking for an idea of where to go, travel creator @emsbudgettravel shared a “absolutely amazing”, “absolutely stunning” and “underrated” European countries in the spring.
In a video posted to Tiktok, the creator said of all 17 countries she has visited, this underrated destination was “probably my favourite country I've visited throughout 2024.”
The creator also added that it is “one of the cheapest countries I've visited in Europe too,” so if you want to plan a spring vacation within your budget, you might want to consider a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Located between Croatia and Serbia, the Balkan country has impressive scenery including the Dinalic Alps, and the capital Sarajevo is surrounded by several mountains, including Trebevic, which offers panoramic views.
Following the devastating civil war that lasted from 1992 to 1995, the historic rich country has rebuilt itself into a destination that many travelers are sought after for hidden gems.
With the abundance of medieval villages, rivers and lakes, @emsbudgettravel said:
From Sarajevo, known as the point of encountering the history of the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarian, you can walk through the iconic “Stari Most,” an archived bridge in the Middle Ages, known for its turquoise seas.
Not only is the medieval city lined with cafes and artisan shops, but Krabika Falls are also a must-see, offering spectacular views for those looking for a more adventurous hiking trail along the canyon of Lakitnika.
Direct flights to Sarajevo International Airport in May, the major airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina, start at £46 from London, but it's worth planning ahead as you'll need to stop by if you're flying from other UK cities.
