The world's highest road where temperature can reach -40c | Travel News | Travel

On the highest roads, temperatures can reach low -40c in winter.

Umling LA is the world's most paved roads and mountain paths. It is located in Ladakh, India, on the ride between Koe Lumpa and the Indus River.

It forms the source of the Umurung River that flows into the Indus and the tributary of the Kiongudur River that flows into Coil Langpa.

The Umling LA Pass is crossed by a road between Chisumle and Demchok, also known as the Umling La Road. Near the pass, the road rises to a height of 5,799 meters, making it the world's best driving road.

Bolivia's 5,777 metre Uturuncu Volcano Road surpassed previously held records. It is higher than South Base Camp on Mount Everest and is more than half the cruising altitude of Commercial Jet Airlines.

The environment poses serious construction challenges, with winter temperatures dropping to -40c and oxygen levels 50% lower than sea level. This road is usually unable to communicate from autumn to summer depending on the snow.

The area around Pass is an endless spread of barren terrain with snow-covered Himalayan views. It's windy and violent winds come from two directions at the same time. The summit has a small bar cafe.

Indian Border Roads Group built 32 miles of paved roads between the villages of Chizmur and Demchok in 2017. This is the only access to Hanru, a remote village in Ladakh, home to India's astronomical observations.

It was built as part of the Indian Army's willingness to provide better connectivity and strategic advantage to the Demchok region due to conflict along the border with China.

Because it is a sensitive area, visits are restricted by the Army and proximity to the Indian-China border, obtaining permission to access the area can be an issue and permits from the Leh DC office will be required.

Tourists can take flights to Leh Airport to reach the pass and hire taxis or private cars to arrive at Chismur village. Visitors are encouraged to avoid altitude sickness, carry warm clothing, food and water, and take precautions to keep an eye on the weather forecast.
