The beautiful city is named the UK's most welcome and is one of the country's most eerie places.

Online travel giant Booking.com says Chester has a “strong sense of community” and a “mystical past.”

The website's annual Traveler Review Awards has earned the top spot in the “welcome” league, with feedback from customers who have booked stays, cars or taxis that voted as the hospitality capital.

Meanwhile, the city was voted as the UK's most troubling in a survey of 2,000 people who believe in ghosts by 15% of respondents.

The study revealed a growing interest in ghostly travel experiences. Over 40% of those voted to remain in ghost accommodation, and nearly 20% are actively seeking such experiences.

Meanwhile, 38% of respondents said they found the presence of a friendly spirit in their hotel rooms reassuring.

Other cities with a significant portion of the vote include York, Edinburgh, Bath and Glasgow. In 79AD, the Romans established Chester as a fort called Deva Vitrix.

Over two-fifths (41%) confess that they will stand up to staying in ghost accommodation, and one in five (19%) are looking for a spectral adventure during their wonders. About 38% feel relieved by a friendly spirit in their hotel rooms.

For thrill seekers and history lovers, Chester boasts a ghost inn and tour dripping with stories of magic, plague and poltergeist activities. These include facilities such as the Pied Bull and The Chilling Dark Chester Tour.

“We're looking forward to seeing you in the future,” said Ryan Pearson, a regional headphonecho at Booking.com.

“It's not surprising that the charming, cobblestone streets, historic architecture and a strong sense of community make it a point of surprise that visitors feel at home. But beyond its friendly atmosphere, Chester has a rich, mystical past and has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in the country.”
