Cape Town, February 11, 2025 – The Molkul Goodwill Foundation is honoured to announce support and sponsorship of the Landmark Foundation's Leopard Conservation Project in DeHoop Nature Reserve, managed by Capunatua.
The project, in collaboration with Capenature, will deploy 31 camera trap stations to sanctuaries to monitor leopards and other mammal species, providing important insights into biodiversity, habitat use and population health. It is intended to provide.
“The collaboration launches a key initiative to monitor and protect leopards in one of South Africa's most biodiversified regions. Dr. Boursmatz, general manager of the Landmark Foundation, said: It's there.
In January 2025, the Landmark Foundation team, represented by Dr. Smuts and Jeannine McManus, set up their first camera station near the Molkul Ocean House. These cameras have daytime and nighttime capabilities and are the first step in a long-term effort to balance conservation with sustainable ecotourism.
“Leopards are keystone predators and are important to maintain an ecological balance. Ed Zeeman, co-founder of the Morkle family and co-founder of the Morkle Goodwill Foundation, said: It states.
The Leopard Surveillance Project offers a unique ecotourism experience for guests of the Molkle family staying at either the Molkle Ocean House or the Molkle Beach Lodge.
“As the project progresses, we look forward to providing guests with the opportunity to deepen their connections with the extraordinary ecosystem of Dehoop Nature Reserve. Guests will be taking part in camera inspections with the Landmark Foundation team and will be able to access cameras. You can view and interpret trap results and participate in presentations by Landmark Foundation experts.
Over 34,000 hectares of Dehoop Nature Reserve is a shelter for South African wildlife. However, challenges such as habitat isolation and limited genetic exchange are threatening apex predators such as leopards.
“The insights gained from this project will guide efforts to create ecological corridors, mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, and ensure the survival of leopards and many other mammals in the Overburg area.” Dr. Smats added. “Camera traps often reveal a variety of animals. We expect other sightings, such as caracals, honey badgers, porcupines and perhaps elusive African wild cats.”
Over the next few months, 30 additional camera trap stations will be installed, and the Landmark Foundation will regularly replace SD cards and analyze spatial data via SECR and Bayesian modeling. This robust scientific approach is based on the landmark leopard conservation heritage, spanning over 74 leopard rescues for over 20 years.
