Currently, travelling between Newquay and Falmouth by train is quite a hassle as there is no direct rail link.
The £56.8 million project is set up to provide much-needed coast-to-coast rail trips in Cornwall.
The complete Mid Cornwall Metro Service will be in operation by 2026, with trains running directly between Newquay and Falmouth every hour.
The Mid Cornwall Metro Project is an exciting development offering new hourly coast-to-coast rail services connecting Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth, and these fascinating seaside areas. Create a direct link between towns for the first time.
The initiative, a collaboration between Network Rail, Cornwall Council and the Great Western Railway, aims to provide better connectivity across Cornwall.
The project will unfold in three different phases, with the first set expected to be completed by this month – February 2025.
Following this, the project will create a 400-meter passing loop at Goss Moor by March 2025, allowing trains to pass each other, improving the reliability of the service.
The final phase, scheduled to be completed in September 2025, will include the installation of new digital signals, further improving operational efficiency.
Main locations such as Roche and Rugle are also planned to improve station improvements to improve accessibility and integrate walking and cycling routes.
The service includes three trains per hour between St. Austell and Truro, increasing the frequency of stations between Parr, St. Austell, Truro and the Maritime Line (Truro to Falmouth).
The entire network also benefits from the introduction of tap-in, tap-out pay when you go to tickets, and the expansion of the system across Cornwall, Plymouth and the Tamar Valley Line.
If you currently want to go to Newquay from Falmouth to Newquay via public transport, you will need to change at St. Austell. Passengers will need to take a train at St. Austell and then switch to another train or bus for the rest of their journey. time.
