Devon is famous for its magnificent Jurassic coastline, historic towns and seaside villages, making it a popular place to stay for summer holidays. However, as these places become increasingly popular, many British people are looking to visit lesser known spots.

One of Devon's best secrets is Budley Salterton, a charming seaside town just 20 minutes from the busy tourist destinations of Sidmouth. “We're looking forward to seeing you in the process of doing things,” said Alex Gwillim, a local expert at Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays.

“Budley Salterton is a genuine hidden gem that boasts a small town filled with beautiful pebble beaches over two miles, iconic red sandstone cliffs of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and unique local businesses.”

The seaside spot has a population of just 7,000 people, but its huge beaches and lack of crowds make the town stand out from other towns.

One of the town's TripAdvisor reviews read: “Great views, friendly community, always clean and great for the family.”

Another added that the beach spots are “greatly untouched,” while the third writes that it is their “good” stay base.

If you're looking for things to do in town, Alex recommended that “adventure seekers take advantage of Budley Salterton's excellent selection of water spots.”

This includes renting stand-up paddle boards or kayaks to enjoy the coastline at the ocean. For those looking for a relaxing visit, you can enjoy the beach, bathe in the sea, or enjoy local cafes and tea rooms.

Alex added: “Budley Salterton is also the perfect place for nature lovers. We head along the beach to Otter's Estuary Nature Reserve, a popular birdwatching spot.

“There are also easy walking trails with fantastic views of Triassic sandstone cliffs and its stunning geology.”

If you're looking for a place to stay to last your trip, there are plenty of accommodations, including cozy cottages, B&Bs, hotels and more.

The town is not that big. This means everything is easy to access and the beach is right away.

However, if you want to explore nearby areas, it is best to have a car to travel.
