Algerian national airline AirAlgérie has taken a major step into its expansion and sustainability strategy with the acquisition of 16 new ATR 72-600 aircraft. The biggest contracts made by an African airline with an ATR to date not only demonstrates the advancement of the airline's fleet, but also highlights the importance of regional ties on the African continent.
Deliveries for these new aircraft are scheduled for between 2026 and 2028.
Over 20 years of commitment at ATR
Since 2003, AirAlgérie has relied on ATRs to strengthen its regional fleet. Over the years, the airline has integrated the ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 aircraft, the latter being the latest addition to the fleet. The acquisition of these 16 new ATR 72-600s will increase the airline's fleet size, strengthening its goal of reducing carbon footprint and improving operational efficiency.
The new aircraft will be equipped with state-of-the-art PW127XT engines to increase fuel efficiency, which is key to short-range and low-density flights, ideal for regional routes in Algeria. These aircraft have the capacity of 72 passengers and are primarily used to increase connectivity between different regions of the country, particularly the southern regions where air transport is essential for economic and social development.

Africa's first flight simulator
One outstanding feature of this agreement is the inclusion of Africa's first ATR 72-600 flight simulator. This will be installed at AirAlgérie's training centre. This will enhance pilot training and improve airline operational safety standards.
“We're looking forward to seeing you in the future,” said Hamza Benhamouda, CEO of AirAlgérie. “The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft that will help connect all regions of our country and support national development through efficient and reliable air transport.
ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude commented: “This order strongly supports the value of the ATR 72-600's capabilities and promoting regional connectivity. With its extremely low operating costs and capabilities in a variety of environments, the ATR 72-600 is ideal for modest aircraft.”
Supporting Africa's regional aviation
This agreement has more impact than AirAlgérie. This represents the largest order ever placed by an African airline with an ATR in its history. This milestone reflects the growth of regional aviation in Africa and the increased demand for efficient and accessible aircraft to connect regions across the continent.
