Tanzania officially opened the John Pombe Magufuli Bridge (the longest in East Africa), spanning three kilometres of Lake Victoria, and swapped an aging ferry service between Kigongo and Bushishi. The bridge, which was launched on June 19, 2025 by President Samia Slu Hassan, is fully funded by domestic resources, will dramatically improve travel and transport to the lake area, promote access to key areas for both locals and visitors, and reduce travel time.
The development has great value for tourism connectivity as the new bridge provides a direct and reliable link to regional markets, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Visitors now have more efficient routes to access attractions in northern Tanzania, such as Serengeti National Park and Lake Victoria. The bridge is also expected to support community-based tourism by improving local access to services, boosting the movement of goods and crafts, and improving the overall visitor experience in the area.
