Between economic promotions and growing appreciation for tourist gems close to home, stays opting for local travel instead of adventure abroad have become a popular choice among travelers in the South African region.

“To go on a holiday just a few hours away is more convenient than going abroad, and is relatively less affordable, and removes the stress of spending time on long-distance flights and transport times,” says Lindy Musetoi, sales and marketing, Regional Director of Minor Hotels.

Travelers, especially those in the millennial and Gen-Z age range, are discovering the beauty of local destinations that offer both a relaxing retreat and an exciting experience. This is because stays tend to be cost-effective, convenient and often full of spontaneous attraction, making them an increasingly popular option for those seeking a quick escape while supporting the local economy.

Why South Africans love their hometown?

According to the recent travel index, Google rose 33% in 2024 compared to the previous year, indicating it is eager to explore its country's common and lesser-known destinations.

In recent years there have been major travel between South Africa and its neighbors, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

One of the most widely agreed reasons for this is that following the Covid-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and health concerns have prompted many to rethink their holiday plans. With borders closed and safety becoming a priority, people began seeking inspiration for holiday close to homes.

This increase in local travel welcomes South Africa's still recovering tourism sector, hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions are experiencing a surge in visitors. “The vacation budget is spent within the community, promoting economic growth, supporting small businesses, and in times of economic uncertainty, staying offers both the joy of travel and the comfort of the home that can be adjusted precisely to your taste,” adds Mthethwa.

Experience world-class hospitality close to home

For those looking to explore South Africa beyond the usual tourist hotspots, there are plenty of hidden gems that offer a unique travel experience. For example, the charming town of Paternostar on the West Coast offers a peaceful seaside escape known for its whitewashed cottages, fresh seafood and breathtaking sunsets.

Furthermore, inland, the Cederberg Mountains offer dramatic rock formations, ancient sunrock art and a perfect retreat for hiking enthusiasts. The Eastern Cape captivates visitors with Hogsback's Fog Forest, Cascade Waterfalls and Tolkien-esque landscapes.

Zimbabwe and Zambia offer unparalleled access to Victoria Falls, one of the world's seven natural wonders, for nature lovers looking to move further away on their South African borders. Visitors can embark on a guided safari, take a Sunset River cruise, or experience the thrill of bungee over the Zambezi River. Luxury stays near waterfalls, such as the Anantara Stanley & Livingston Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe and the Royal Livingston Hotel in Anantara, will allow travelers to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and adventures of the area.

And if the island's escape is more appealing, Mozambique's Bazaruto Islands offer untouched beaches, world-class diving and a vibrant local culture. Whether snorkeling among the reefs, deep sea fishing or exploring traditional island villages, this destination offers a rich blend of relaxation and discovery.

“From indulging in spa treatments, exploring historic landmarks, hiking scenic trails, and enjoying cultural festivals, travelers can tailor their experiences to their personal preferences,” says Mthethwa. “By traveling locally and exploring what's on offer at Africa's southern gateway, travelers can expand our minds and perspectives and access immersive, local experiences that will make travel even more memorable.”

As travel preferences continue to evolve, staying is expected to remain the best option for those seeking convenience, affordability and unique experiences. And we discover that South Africa and its neighbors offer incredible destinations, and that more travelers don't always need a passport on unforgettable holidays.
