Tourists heading to Spain this summer have been warned that they could be fined a total of several hundred euros as authorities crack down on fraudulent pedestrians. If you text while crossing the road, walk into traffic without paying attention, or refuse to get a drug or alcohol test, you can land on a very large bill.
The Spanish resort reports that General Dirección De Tráfico (DGT), who is responsible for enforcing Spanish road rules, is cracking down on the pedestrians in question. The rules are not new, but traffic officers reportedly pay attention to “dangerous habits” on Spanish roads. According to Euro Weekly News, drivers historically are generally responsible for crashes involving pedestrians, cyclists or motorcycles.
This means that pedestrians pay little attention to traffic when crossing the road, according to the English website.
But all this could be about to change, with traffic cops cracking in the rule breaker. For example, anyone using a mobile phone and not paying attention to traffic lights or instructions from traffic officials would amount to around £170.
And walking or walking on highways or double driveways – not the most grestestest idea at the best time, but you could face a fine of 80 euros. Similarly, not using zebra crossing correctly – even ignoring pedestrian light – could result in a fine of 80 euros. This is equivalent to £68.
And if you refuse to take alcohol or drug tests after an accident, you will be subject to a really large penalty. This does not apply to drivers only – pedestrians involved in accidents may also be required to take the test.
And anyone who refuses can give them an invoice of 500 euros. It’s worth £426. That’s enough to ruin anyone’s holidays.
DGT is distributing advice on how to stay safe and avoid fines. These include using Zebra intersections properly, not using phones when walking down the road, and following traffic lights.
It is also recommended that pedestrians cross only if they are safe for both themselves and the driver – and do not rely on rotating drivers to avoid them. The organization also strengthened the importance of staying away from highways and double driveways.
