The UK is just beginning to welcome spring, but many European destinations already enjoy the warm climate. Located on Spain's Mediterranean coast, Alicante is a favorite among travelers, whether they are seeking beach retreats or cultural escapes.
The city is easily accessible from all major UK airports and has a return flight from £33 from London in April. With temperatures currently reaching 21c, Alicante is perfect for those craving early spring sunshine. Visitors can relax on Alicante's stunning beaches. Travel to Castilo de Santa Barbara, an impressive fortress that dominates the city's skyline, such as Playa della Albefeta.
However, if you're going further along the coast from Alicante, you'll come across a unique resort called “hidden gems,” and Manchester Evening News reports.
Located between Alicante and Benidorm, Villa Joyosa – or “Joyful Town” offers a unique holiday experience. It's only a 40-minute bus ride from Alicante or an hour by tram, and the service runs frequently.
Villajoyosa is known for its vibrant, multicolored buildings lined up on the town's Golden Beach. Historically, these bright shades were believed to help fishermen find homes while they were out to the sea.
Last year, this charming town crowned Europe's “best hidden gem” by the guide's best destinations. It is a fitting title, naturally, as it is often covered by tourists flocking to more popular Spanish destinations like Alicante and Benidorm.
But Villajoyosa offers more than its vibrant building. There are several great beaches, as you would expect from the town surrounded by Costa Blanca. The main beach, Playara Villa Jososa, also known as Playa Centro, is surrounded by colorful houses in the town.
For those looking for a more private retreat, Playa de Bornow is the ideal choice. This pebble beach is hidden between the cliffs, providing a sense of isolation. Or, blessed with palm trees lined with Playa el Paraiso and beautiful blue blue water, another great option.
Villajoyosa has a different feather on its cap. It is the birthplace of Spain's most famous chocolate brand. The town has several chocolate factories that welcome visitors, including Chocolate Valor, which opened its doors in 1831.
Don't be surprised if you detect chocolate hints in the air while sunbathing on the beach.
