Spain Holiday Update as a Large Hotel Strike Curses Confusion for the British | Travel News | Travel

During the peak summer, major hotel strikes in the Balearic Islands were planned, causing confusion for British tourists. Workers in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca are scheduled to hold massive strikes on June 6th. There will then be a few days of strike action in July, unless a transaction is made.

The trade union UGT, organizer of the strike, said there was not enough progress in demanding better wages and working conditions. They reportedly intend to cause as much confusion as possible on the holidays, urging the hotel to do everything in their power to prevent it.

On June 6th, the crowd is expected to meet at UGT headquarters in Palma at noon at the Marolcan Hotel Federation for the assembly where attendees will be updated on the progress of negotiations.

Another meeting is scheduled for the end of June in front of the local hotel association headquarters in the main tourist destination, Platja de Palma.

The association hopes to add another similar protest to the Palmanova Magaluff region, located at the main tourist centre in Palma Bay.

More actions have been assigned in July, according to local newspaper Diario de Mallorca.

A UGT official said, “In principle, if there is no possibility of an agreement, we will call for a strike that lasts for several days.”

The union is complaining of lack of access to decent housing, saturation of tourists, increased workloads and lack of halt pay.

It is the largest union in the hospitality sector and is about to renegotiate a collective agreement for the Balearic Hotel Industry.

Jose Garcia Rocio, general secretary of the island's UGT services, said there has been little agreement to date.

With few indications of an imminent consensus, the union president decided to begin mobilizing a strike plan on Wednesday.

Another union CCO (Workers' Labor Council) has been invited to participate.

Thousands of hotel workers were already out on May 1st this year.
