Kwazulu-Natal's economic development, tourism and environmental issues have announced plans to secure direct international flights to Durban as part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism and economic growth in the region. MEC Pastor Musa Zondi confirmed his efforts during his 2025-2026 budget presentation to establish direct links with key markets such as France, the UK and India. The state recorded 620,000 international visitors and R200 million tourism revenue in 2024, highlighting the role of tourism as a strategic factor in regional development.
The key to the initiative is to strengthen air connectivity through King Shaka International Airport, while simultaneously upgrading regional hubs in Margate, Newcastle, Richards Bay, Urundi and Mukuz. These efforts aim to unlock domestic tourism circuits and attract further investment. Zondi also emphasized that the state's focus is on tapping into the maritime economy, given the 600km coastline. However, concerns remain regarding environmental management, particularly beach water quality, with industry stakeholders highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and sustainable destination management to support future demand.
