With the launch of the Kgodumodumumo Dinosaur Strettation Center in Golden Gate Highlands National Park, South Africa will announce one of its most important cultural and scientific tourism developments. Opening on June 22, 2025, R120 million promises that the EU-funded project will boost local tourism while offering visitors an immersive experience that highlights Africa's ancient natural heritage. The centre, jointly developed by the Tourism Bureau, Department of Forest Science, Department of Environment (DFFE), South African National Parks (Sunparks), and the state governments of the Free State, is located in one of South Africa's most scenic protected areas.
The centre presents the world's most ancient dinosaur embryos of interest, and offers interactive displays covering paleontology, geology, archaeology and Basotho cultural heritage. It also includes training and economic opportunities for the surrounding communities, with newly certified tourist guides expected to graduate during launch. The Kgodumodumumo Center is designed to support sustainable tourism and local development, and is expected to increase visitor stays in the region and amplify the appeal of the Free State among heritage, family and adventure travelers.
