Ahead of the 5th Marine Corps Reserve (MPA) day on August 1st, a new digital map has been released to help the public, including anglers and divers, better understand the location and regulations of the MPA in South Africa. Developed by marine scientists Dr. Bruce Mann and Dr. Ryan Daly of the Oceanography Institute, Dr. Ryan Daly, has simplified complex legal explanations from the government's official gazette, making it accessible, colour-coded visuals available online for free via Google Earth.
The map covers coastal MPAs within 40 nautical miles and shows various activity zones using signal systems. The key rules for each area are summarized in bullet points, and by enabling location services, users can track real-time locations relative to MPA boundaries. Supported by the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, the initiative aims to increase public compliance through recognition and is expected to benefit both resource users and conservation authorities. The launch forms part of a broader MPA day activity that promotes sustainable marine use, biodiversity protection, and marine tourism development.
