South Africa will hold the G20's first Virtual Tourism Working Group (TWG) meeting on March 5, 2025, bringing together officials and experts to discuss the growth of sustainable tourism among its member nations. The meeting is the first in a series leading up to the G20 Tourism Ministers meeting in September, and aims to share best practices in line with G20 tourism priorities and develop practical strategies. Key areas of focus include AI-driven innovation in tourism, funding for sustainable development, improving air connections, and resilience in tourism growth.
As the first African nation to lead the G20 presidency, South Africa will use its term to support a developmental agenda that benefits the continent under the theme of “solidarity, equality and sustainability.” Subsequent in-person G20 tourism conferences include the 2nd TWG conference at Kwazulu-Natal (11-13 May 2025) and the 3rd TWG conference at Mpumalanga (10-11 September 2025). These debates are expected to shape global policies for the more inclusive and sustainable tourism sector.
