South Africa has set up its second G20 Tourism Working Group Conference in Durban, indicating that the G20 Tourism Council will be held for the first time in African soils. The conference, held on May 11, 2025, preceded the African Travel Indava and highlighted the country's position as Africa's only G20 member. To his representative, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille reaffirmed South Africa's commitment to global tourism cooperation under the theme of “solidarity, equality and sustainability” and emphasized the importance of aligning the G20 agenda with the African Union's agenda 2063.
With more than 130 G20-related conferences scheduled in South Africa this year, the event is considered a platform for investment, job creation and improving Africa's tourism voice. The Durban Conference will affect the outcomes of the G20 Tourism Ministers' Meeting in Mpumalanga later this year and the National Summit held in Johannesburg. Key areas of focus include tourism financing, AI and startup support, air connectivity and resilience. The representative will also be attending Travel Indaba in Africa, with over 1,300 exhibitors and 1,200 international buyers, providing opportunities to directly engage with Africa's growing tourism sector.
