Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) is building a new partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest airline, to introduce electric aviation taxi services to the region.

The collaboration aims to revolutionize urban transport in Africa and utilize Archer's innovative midnight Ebtor aircraft.

Ethiopian Airlines will be the second partner in Archer's “Launch Edition” program. The design of this program establishes a scalable framework for deploying electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft in major markets.

    Pioneering air mobility in Africa

Ethiopian Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, with a vast network of over 140 international destinations, will work with Archer to develop an all-electric aviation taxi network.

The initiative aims to transform commuting by providing faster, more sustainable alternatives to traditional ground transportation.

Designed for quick successive flights with minimal charging times, Archer's midnight aircraft plays a key role in this effort.

The “Launch Edition” program, announced by Archer in February 2025, focuses on deploying an early midnight fleet of aircraft with Archer pilots, engineers and engineers.

This comprehensive approach ensures smooth operational integration, public acceptance, and initial revenue generation. Archer offers the essential back-end software infrastructure and a user-friendly booking application to support city aviation mobility operations.

    Exploring the possibilities of ecotourism

The main focus is on establishing efficient aviation taxi networks, but Archer and Ethiopian airlines are investigating the possibility of using midnight for ecotourism. This opens up exciting possibilities to showcase the beauty of Africa's natural beauty while minimizing environmental impact.

The signing ceremony on Addis Ababa saw the formalization of new partnerships. The parties have pledged to work closely with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft at midnight.

Mesfin Tasew, group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, pointed to the company's commitment to pioneering Advanced Air Mobility Solutions. “We are dedicated to improving connectivity and promoting sustainable aviation in Africa,” he said.

“The partnership with Archer Aviation is a crucial step in bringing cutting-edge EVTOL technology to Ethiopia. Together, we aim to redefine local travel and create new opportunities for efficient and environmentally friendly transportation.”

Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “We are excited to be partnering with Ethiopian Airlines following the announcement with Abu Dhabi Airlines,” he said.

“Africa presents an undeveloped opportunity for advanced air mobility with diverse use cases. We are proud to take this important step with an Ethiopian airline.”

Alastair Curtis, Archer's Africa general manager, added more comments. “This partnership is a transformative step towards bringing sustainable and efficient air mobility solutions to Ethiopia and the wider African market. We are committed to working with leading partners to unlock the possibilities of EVTOL technology.”

Nathan Stickney, Commercial Attaché, US Embassy and Addis Ababa also praised the collaboration. “USA aviation companies have consistently demonstrated American quality and innovation. Through this agreement with Ethiopian Airlines, we are excited by the potential impact of Archer in the region.”

Midnight: The revolution in urban travel

Archer's goal is to transform city travel by replacing long car commutes with quick 10-20 minute electric taxi flights.

Archer designs a piloted four-seater midnight Evtol for safety, sustainability, low noise and cost competitiveness.

Archer Aviation is dedicated to developing the technologies and aircraft needed for the future of aviation. Ethiopian Airlines, a leading African airline, has invested in modern aircraft, launched a green program and implemented sustainable practices to achieve environmental sustainability.

Airlines aim to reduce carbon emissions and increase operational efficiency across operations.

The collaboration combines Archer's innovative technology with the extensive network of Ethiopian Airlines. This partnership between Archer Aviation and Ethiopian Airlines means a major leap into a more sustainable and efficient future for air travel in Africa
