Saruni Basecamp announces new safari havens at the Kalama Community Conservancy
Saruni Basecamp is pleased to announce that it has successfully launched Basecamp Samburu, an intimate tent camp that has been welcoming guests since January 2025. Located in community-owned Kalama Conservancy, this exclusive retreat offers breathtaking views of Mount Orolokwe, immersing themselves in the charming beauty of Kenya's northern territory.
Designed by Norwegian architect Bull Architector, Basecamp Samburu features five suites of thoughtful and elegant tents, including a specially designed family tent with two spacious bedrooms connected by a central lounge. Each accommodation is carefully placed to maximize a drastic view of the stunning landscape, while maintaining the highest standards of comfort and privacy.
What really sets this property apart is its two distinctive outdoor penetration, offering an unforgettable experience under the African skies. Both feature private jacuzzis for a romantic evening under the stars, as well as intimate dining arrangements and full bathroom facilities.
Embracing environmentally friendly principles, Basecamp Samburu pays homage to the spirit of early explorers through its KANVA design. The construction of the camp uses locally produced materials, minimizing the impact on the natural wilderness that we call home. Through minimalist design, the camp offers an extraordinary safari experience that celebrates the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Samburu region.
Jeremiah Mutisya, CEO of Saruni Basecamp, commented on the launch.
“Kenya's long-term tourism goal was to support and expand the development of community reserves, which we believe is key to protecting both wildlife and rural Kenya communities. And we hope to bring new categories to Samburu to diversify the tourist experience by expanding destinations to add or include in Kenya's safari itinerary.
Camp offers unique experiences such as late-night stargazes, dark night Scorpion safaris, visits to Samburu village, and excursions during the dry season of wells, search for “Samburu Special Five” for daily safari game drives within the Calama Community Conservancy or the iconic Samburu Game Reserve. Despite its far-flung location, the camp offers modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi, solar power, a private veranda, a shared lounge and dining facilities.
