Budget airline Ryanair has launched direct flights from major UK airports to Portugal's stunning Second City, remaining four times a week.

The holidaymaker dreams of that “perfect” weekend getaway, and can make that dream a reality by flying from Edinburgh to Porto this summer.

Porto is famous for its waterside restaurant offering port wine, local seafood dishes and UNESCO-listed history centres, with no crowds descending to Lisbon every year and is named as one of Europe's most underrated beautiful cities. .

Flights from the Scottish capital form part of an impressive 72 new routes this summer when Ryanair will feature operators in Europe.

“Ryanair is pleased to announce Porto's summer schedule,” said Elena Cabrera, Portugal's communications director at Ryanair.

“This summer, Ryanair will operate a total of 72 routes, allowing us to increase the options for memorable travel experiences during this incredible season.”

Among Porto's must-see spots is the incredible Ribaria Rello Bookstore, a historic site with neo-Gothic façades, stained glass ceilings and spectacular staircases. Meanwhile, the Clerigos Tower stands at an impressive 75 metres, offering panoramic views of the city.

Finally, head to the impressive double deck Metal Arch Bridge that connects Porto to the Villa Nova de Gaia and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lewis I Bridge.

Finally, in the historic city centre, the Catholic Cathedral of Porto offers incredible views of the Douro River and is one of the oldest monuments in the city, completed in 1737.

For those looking to explore beyond the city centre, Porto is the gateway to the Douro Valley, a UNESCO-listed region that boasts world-class vineyards. Here, tourists can explore the iconic port wine cellars of Graham, Sandeman, Taylor, or Ferreira.

Ryanair's new routes include flights between Porto and Rome's Fiumicino, Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin and Frankfurt.

The city has been called the “perfect holiday” by several TripAdvisor travelers.

One writes: “The best town for the weekend. A luxurious place to visit, the best restaurants in the world, and a place where people are very friendly.”

“Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with many historic charms and monuments that can be spent on two days exploring,” another wrote. “Most of the important attractions are within walking distance.”
