Rwanda's Rikgela National Park is set to welcome 70 silos from South Africa to South Africa later this month, marking the country's largest rhinoceros transformation. This initiative, which includes a 3,400-kilometer journey, forms part of a broader conservation effort to establish safe breeding populations and strengthen Rwanda's reputation as a major safari destination.
The move is based on a similar relocation in 2021, with 30 white sinus being introduced to the Red Gelace. This translocation is considered an important step in species conservation as approximately 17,000 southern white rhinos remain in the wild and poaching is increasing. The reintroduction will also increase Rwanda's biodiversity and add even more appeal to its high value wildlife tourism offering.
