Rwanda has secured a $9 million grant from the Global Environmental Facilities (GEF) to restore the ecosystems throughout the Nyoungwe Luhango Corridor in the country's southern province and to enhance climate resilience. The initiative, part of the GEF-8 Ecosystem Restoration Integration Program, is implemented by the Rwanda Environmental Management Agency, and aims to rehabilitate over 2,000 hectares of forests and wetlands and promote sustainable land management on approximately 9,000 hectares of farmland.
The project will benefit more than 289,000 people in Luhango, Nyanza and Nyamagave districts, focusing on improving agricultural productivity, lowering climate risks and supporting sustainable livelihoods. It is projected to create more than 2,200 jobs, particularly for young people, through green economic activities such as agroforestry, fruit planting and non-winter forest product value chains. The programme further complements World Bank-backed conservation investments in Rwanda and supports key goals under the country's national transformation strategy.
