Part of Marriott Bonboy's distinctive and independent hotel growth collection, the Tribute Portfolio welcomes South Africa's first fortune with the opening of its Road Charles Hotel in Somerset West, a tribute portfolio hotel. Countering the adoring backdrop of Cape Wine Land in Somerset West, this iconic hotel has a new identity that seamlessly blends old world charm with modern design and sincere service, offering a unique stay for independent travelers.

Located just 45 minutes from Cape Town and just 45 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, Road Charles Hotel offers easy access to Tawald's famous wine estates, golf courses, beaches and cultural landmarks. Set in a 22-acre idyllic landscape garden that once formed part of an 18th-century farm, the facility offers guests a quiet connection to nature and a rich heritage of the region.

“The Road Charles Hotel has been a beloved landmark in Somerset West for decades and we are excited to introduce a tribute portfolio to South Africa at this famous hotel. Its impressive design, welcoming spaces and deep connection to the community make it an exciting destination for travelers looking for something unique.”

Reimagined Design: Timeless Charms Meet Modern Styles

A major renovation in 2022 brought the Charles Hotel Lord back, seamlessly combining contemporary design with timeless elegance, bringing inspiration from Somerset West's name and founder of South Africa's first public library.

The hotel features bold artwork from vibrant local artists, newly manicured gardens and stylish spaces designed to bring people together and connect with the local community.

The lobby features an abstract installation inspired by local flora, with African patterns and motifs throughout the decoration celebrating the region's rich wildlife and plant life.

Each of the 198 rooms is designed with striking emerald green tints reminiscent of British country gardens, complemented by luxurious bedding, charming lounge areas and private outdoor spaces offering wide views of the gardens and mountains. In a moment of quiet hideaway, the cozy library invites guests to sink into chairs, grab a book, and relax with a warm, comforting drink.

    Food and Social Hub

Foodies can delight in either the hotel's early morning to the late drink, paying tribute to the double influences of South Africa and the British influences.

The garden terrace features a continental and hot English breakfast, and the recently redesigned Lavinya restaurant features contemporary decor and a lively dining experience. Guests can enjoy an outdoor dining poolside meal or an elegant dinner paired with the best wines from the hotel's vast wine cellar area.

Every afternoon, guests will be welcoming afternoon tea in the lobby lounge and feature a selection of delicious pastries, scones and tea. Inspired by Scotland, St Andrew Pub offers heartfelt food and pints, and a lively venue for you to enjoy a game with other guests and locals.

Resort-style amenities and cutting-edge meeting spaces

For relaxation, guests can enjoy two swimming pools, a fitness centre, three tennis courts, a quiet spa and a full-service hair salon. The hotel features a dam, a private gazebo and a trickle ring stream, offering a scenic backdrop for a relaxed afternoon stroll.

The Road Charles Hotel offers sophisticated settings for events of all sizes. As Wineland's third largest conference venue, it features 11 well-equipped meeting rooms and flexible spaces for gatherings of up to 500 delegates. A dedicated event planner ensures a seamless experience for corporate meetings, weddings and special occasions.

“The Charles Hotel Lord has always been a place of timeless elegance and sincere service,” said Julia Ward, general manager of the Charles Hotel Lord. “From bartenders who know your favorite drinks to concierges who share hidden local gems, every stay is designed to feel like a home away from home. Joining our tribute portfolio will bring you an exciting new chapter, showing you a fresh touch and unique experience while maintaining the warmth, charm and hospitality that makes the Lord Charles Hotel special.”

The Road Charles Hotel will be participating in Marriott International's award-winning travel program, Marriott Bonvoy, where members can earn and redeem points to stay in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio at this newly reimagined hotel and other locations.
